Allahu Akbar! "Allah is Greater", as we think it means — but 'greater' than what, when He, in His Beauty and Majesty, is beyond compare?


Imam al-Ghazali establishes it to mean Allah is the One Truly Existent, that "every thing is perishing, save His Aspect." It is to assert, as the Knowers have witnessed, that in the face of Multiplicity passing away into Unity, Allah remains the Sole Existent, and hence far beyond being "greater" by way of relation and comparison. Therefore, it is to also, in perpetuity, recognise our debt of existence to Him; and to acknowledge via our deeds that utter indebtedness. This is the spirit of the ʿĪd takbīr: that true victory lies in returning home to that aspect of ourselves — the nafs al-nāṭiqah — that forged the mithāq with Allah the Exalted, and in so doing made a resounding commitment to love Him, forever and…
